I'm on the central coast between Sydney and Newcastle. The 35d drives very smooth, twin turbos are fantastic. Also if you buy a used car make sure it has reversing camera it is a MUST on a car this size. We tried the X1 but the F30 is so smooth to drive and the 320d is so economical too (I'm older now I don't push the accelerator that hard anymore) in short the X1 did not feel as nice as the F30.
Interesting how you are going from 320 to X5 and we are doing the opposite, X5 to 320. You will love the car, I drove the current model and the softer steering and new 8 speed box make it easier to drive although the HUD is not visible if you have polarized sunglasses on.
