I doubt changing a single component like thermostat will change the engine temp, BMW needs 32-bit processor to maintain this engine. Think, many-many parameters to monitor and use to run the engine properly.

BTW, it seems to be electronics meaning it's potentially open and close (with varying degree of flow control) electronically by engine function; unlike the ole day where the spring tension dictate the opening and at what temp.

Agree the emission and CAFE dictate how BMW design their engines, so BMW makes them run super hot to appease govt.
