Because I can't stand driving boring cars (even if it's just to the grocery store). I hated driving the X3 and the standard X5's aren't very exciting either. Neither my wife nor I have any sort of daily commute so gas isn't really an issue. The best part about the X5M is my wife can drive it comfortably like a normal X5 (only with better brakes), and I can have fun with it too when I need to go somewhere I don't want to take the M3.
