At the risk of starting a Federal DOT debate....why hasn't BMW and other manufacturers developed a simple "code" to deactivate the driver Airbag, pending recall replacement, along with an owner endorsed waiver. It's either safer with, or without it. If the risks are greater with the airbag, turn it off temporarily. If it's safer with it in place, leave it alone. The vehicles have many other safety systems in place, and the airbag was/is never a guarantee to begin with. At the end of the day, less than 1% of vehicles affected will ever deploy the airbag, so wouldn't it make more sense to avoid 99% of the cost and risk?
