I got the warranty when I bought my new to me (used) 2010 X5M in February 2015. Figured better safe than sorry.
The crankcase valve/hose issue happened after I already had my warranty. However repair was not covered because the warranty company considered this an emmission component which it explicitly lists in its exclusion section.
