The X5 and X6 are for two really different markets. The X6 will be a low volume seller, and exotic version of the extremely successful X5. Without the X5 BMW wouldn't have a real SUV, even if they kept the X6.
A great analogy is thinking of the X5 as a 3series sedan and the X6 as a 3 series coupe -- dropping the more successful/practical sedan would make no sense.
