Then according to the cop you can almost never put the car seat in the middle of the back seat since most cars have a fold down arm rest. I'd be willing to bet that the armrest won't move in an accident and if it did it would be an unbelievable amount of force from the rear and if it did 'push/pull' out how much force would it have to actually harm a child in a rear facing car seat.

I'd take my chances with placing the child in the middle than the edge during an accident.

Also, why did you goto a police station to have your car seat installed? I also live in socal and never heard of that before. I know certain people don't tighten it well enough, but i've made sure to make it super tight and pull and push on it to ensure it doesn't move that much, if at all.

BTW, i also have an X5 and have always placed my child in the middle (rear facing and eventually foward facing). After having another, we had them next to the doors.
