They are great engines. I have a 335d with 400hp about 650tq (hybrid turbos) and the thing has not let me down. The mpg is pretty insane too...I'm getting 41+ mpg at 80mph...
Most problems are emissions related or use of poor fuel. Both of these things can be solved. Stick to the big truck stop fueling areas thus they have a fresher supply of fuel...
