Funny, you and I were in the same boat. I also have a 135i, so I wasn't looking for neck-snapping performance. I ended up with the 35i simply because I wanted the M Sport package, which the 35d does not offer. The MPG between the 35i and 35d will be quite similar. Diesel in Texas is also more expensive, so it did not make sense.
Go with the 35i as you will get the LCI version of the X5. The 2010 was pre-LCI and looks quite dated. But you already noticed this as you mentioned the LED angel eyes, which are indeed a feature of a 2012 X5.
The N55 is a nice engine but as you might know, it's a bit jerkier than the diesel equivalent. Nothing you're not used to if you have a 135is (assuming you have DCT).
