I own the X5 50i and have driven the X6M at the BMW PC. I assume its similar to the X5M in performance/handling. But that was months before I even test drove the 50i.

The 50i is more than enough power and torque across the whole RPM range. I seldom floor it since a quick punch in 2nd or 3rd exceeds most speed limits in a big hurry. The engine is very docile and the 8 speed auto is very smooth. The ride with the 19" RFTs is very smooth (especially compared to my Z4 35i, also with 19 RFTs), yet the handling is quite impressive. I do have M Sport, active suspension, and active steering.

The X6M on track would blow your mind, how well it can keep up with the best sport sedans and sports cars 1500 lbs lighter. It can actually be tossed around (with lots of respect given to its size and weight). It is brutally quick in 2nd and 3rd gears, and has a much more vocal sound track than the 50i but is quiet when poking (but not as smooth sounding as the 50i). The torque is just as broad as the 50i but more forceful in upper RPMS. The 6 speed auto in the X6M had a brutal 3-2 downshift in sport mode but that may have been an exception and not the norm. It's handling had phenomenal grip and little lean but actually felt heavier than the 50i does when pushed thru an S curve.

In summary, both are great choices, where the 50i has more than enough performance and handling than most need and the X5M would be for those that want more than that or just the ultimate "top dog" but it comes with a harder "edge" to it.
