Ehhh, not to toss you a red herring here, but my burning smell had nothing to do with the coolant lines (and this was also the BMW diagnosis.)
The smell was from the plastics above the firewall. Give them a look at your convenience and make sure you're not chasing the wrong issue.
IMO anything over a couple of hundred bucks for the replacement of those top coolant hoses is ridiculous.
As you go through the process, be a great forum member and share your parts used, gotchas, and tips/tricks. I have yet to see a single model not afflicted with these wears and literal tears.
