The Scorpions are high speed snows whereas the Winter Carvings have a lower speed rating, cost less and are better in snow/ice (presumably worse on dry pavement). Scorp. I&S is a half baked snow tire - now called a winter tire (which I run on the X and like) and the other is a more dedicated hard core, old school snow tire.

Pirelli has a new redesigned v rated winter tire. That's the best bet IMHO.
