Last winter I made the mistake of going out in my 335i (this is before I owned the X5) in what seemed like very light snow. Went to dinner, it kept coming down but wasn't more than 1/2" deep. I thought I'd be fine for the short drive home on my 19" Conti DW tires. Not. Even. A little bit. Driving on the flat road was fine, but as soon as I tried to go up the slightest incline I was sliding all over the place and I'm lucky as hell I didn't hit a parked car. Yes, I was driving extremely cautiously and slowly, didn't make a difference on summer tires. Obviously you'll fare better in an AWD vehicle, but that'll be the last time I venture out in snow without snow tires, even in my X5.
