It does seem absurd that after all that tech it's only a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and co2, especially given the leaps bmw have made with their diesels like the 35d and 40d. 1.6 miles on all electric at up to 37mph is a bit of a joke too - that wouldn't get me on to a main road.
But having a "hybrid" badge and that magic word in their advertising and free editorial column inches? priceless.
