Yes, the 35d has super dated technology. The 6 speed auto is ancient and the engine has been around forever. The rumor is that the new one will have the new 8 speed auto but the same engine
The Touareg on the other hand is mostly recent technology - it's a Porsche in VW clothing. Get the VW
