It's a common misconception that the X5/6M uses the special 10w-60 oil for the M5/6 and M3 engines as people think with the M letter behind the X5/6 badge it will be using the same oil.

The 10w-60 oil is needed only for those cars because of the specially build nature and tolerance of those engines only, those high revving engines needs the thicker oil in order for the oil to stay on spinning parts longer to lubricant, if they use lighter oil the oil will get fling off too early.

The twin turbo V8 in the X5/6M starts life as a regular twin turbo V8 in BMW's range so they obviously uses the same oil as the regular car.

Because of the higher price of the special 10w-60, some dealers are known to 'spec' them for the higher profit margins, not knowing the thicken oil will harm the X5/6M engine in the long run when they can't pass through oil passages fast enough when hot.
In any case, they will blamed it on manufacturing defect if and when the engine fails as they are using 'BMW' motor oils.
i am trying my best to agree with you, but they specifically said to use 10W-60 from the dealers in Asia, or maybe they are different due to the different climates?

oh gosh, 5W-30 or 10W-60??
