I ran a dedicated summer/winter setup on my M3, but maintaining 2 sets of wheels/tires was a total PITA and with Denver's 'winter' there are really 0 days you need snow tires with an X5.
All seasons make a lot of sense for a large portion of the country, so it's not really a matter of being cheap.

I'll add to this - often people have their "summer" tires and their "winter tires". But they put "snow tires" on for winter and unless you get a ton of snow all the time, snow tires are a bad choice. If the roads are not snowy, then a snow tire has terrible handling capabilities. It can't turn or stop as good as an all season.
The Nokian WGR2/3 is a great all season tire that you can use year round without worry. However, if you want the max performance tire for the summer, then a set of summer tires and some all season's will often perform better than dedicated snow tires. I just don't think many people use/need a summer tire however (crazy BMW drivers excluded
