The pre-2004 X5s are the conventional 60 back 40 front fixed ratio. The only time I experienced a lot of DSC was when I got caught in the truck during a freezing rainstorm with the AS tires, and the DSC intervened frequently, to the point of annoyance. With the winter tires it rarely intervenes, to the point where I thought it was broken (it isn't). Lucky for my wife she doesn't goose the accelerator, but if the weather gets nasty I take it and leave her the xDrive 325xi, because it is FAR FAR better in poor traction situations.
What surprised me the most about the '02 truck is that in my '04 325i, the DSC would intervene frequently and appropriately in the winter, with excellent winter tires.
