But a friend of mine that follows it with new BMWs reports no oil consumption between yearly oil changes.

And most of the people that report oil consumption every 1-5K claim to have followed BMW's procedures for break-in to the letter.
I also picked up PCD and varied my speed (and did tail of the dragon and have had to add one quart in the 3 years I've owned the X6). The quart was at 12K....
