Actually the EDC is a separate function, it stands for Electronic Damping Control, http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...r_control.html

It's actually related to the suspension and has no bearing on the exhaust valves.

I've found the easiest way to check if your valves are operating correctly is to start your truck up (warm) and then push the "M" button. You should hear a noticeable increase in exhaust drone or rumble. Then just take a flash light and take a peek inside either of the two outside muffler tips and you should see a circular flap that is half way open. If it's not, then there's a problem with it.
