Question Trouble with fuel door (NOT the locking pin)

I've found plenty of forums posts regarding issues opening the fuel door and the cause being the lock pin not disengaging, manually pulling on the green tab in the trunk, etc . . . this is not that issue.

Fuel door is unlocked, pin is disengaged, it just doesn't open when pushing on the fuel cover. A long fingernail or plastic spudger easily open the fuel door, and once the cover is open, pushing on the mechanism that is supposed to pop open the door cycles it just fine. It's like there is suddenly more distance between the fuel door and the mechanism so that it's not engaging when pushing on the door . . . except it doesn't look like that's the case, and, as I said once the door is open I can pop the mechanism in and out with a minimum of pressure, no difficulty or noise when doing it. And if I leave it "popped out" when closing the fuel door, it closes and resets it fine.

Anyone else seen this behaviour? Any words of wisdom? I've done some searching and can't find any posts about similar behaviour, other posts about the fuel door all seem to be about issues with the locking mechanism.
