I would generally agree with the statement that you hear a lot of bad stuff on the forums. Many BMWs are fairly reliable like my 335d, but bmw V8s are generally not. But generalizing you inline 6 is a good proxy for the N63 v8 is not a good assumption.

The N63 are really bad engines for reliability. Those who don't need expensive repairs like valve stems etc. are a minority at > 70K miles. Even my service adivsors and indy recommand against an N63. Even after the customer care packages.
