BMW bundles the Assist option with the Bluetooth option. Functionality wise, you do NOT need to have BMW assist to pair your phone with the idrive system, however due to the way BMW packages the different options (at least in the USA and in Canada), you need to take or pay for the Assist option/package to get the Bluetooth option!
You can use your ipod/iphone with a standard USB cable and you will be able to access the mp3 files on your ipod/iphone, however if you want full integration with the idrive, you will need the Y cable that should be included with your 6FL option (comes standard in the USA and in Canada for the 09 X6 models).
