Each BMW model is different...what models do your friends drive? My E46 is considerably less expensive to maintain than my E70 or E90.

If you've owned BMW's in the past I don't think an N55 powered X5 is going to shock you when it comes to repairs.
My friends have sedans one is a 2011 528i and the other is a 2014 535xi. I have a family friend who owns a 2010 x3 and a 2005 x5. Out of all of them the x5 has had the most problems but only recently and is 11 years old. I have only owned Honda, Toyota and Subaru vehicles for the last 12 years, never owned german cars.
