New to the forum, so forgive me if this has been discussed.

My wife and I are considering purchasing a pre-owned X5. My budget looks like it'll put me into a low mileage 2008-2010 model (30,000-40,000 miles) or a higher mileage 2011-2013 (70,000-80,000 miles).

I really have no preference on engine. Prefer the performance of the V8, but like the fuel economy in the 6 or diesel.

Question: Should I consider earlier models with low mileage, or should I place more value in the later model years?

Any other input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Keep in mind the 2011-2013 models include the mid-life updates, often called LCI (life cycle impulse). Not only do you get aesthetic updates like body colored bumpers, LED taillights, new interior and wheel options, but most importantly you get the new lineup of engines and transmissions (8 speed vs. 6 speed).

Regarding the 2011+ engines, the I6 is only marginally better on fuel economy than the V8 - 16/23 vs. 14/20. I'm currently looking and have driven both models, and the V8 definitely feels like the proper engine for this 5000 pound vehicle. I have not driven the pre-LCI I6 or V8, but they have less HP & TQ than the newer models. You say engine doesn't matter but it might if you drive them all

Maintenance is going to be costly regardless of what model you get. Even an older, low mileage X5 is still out of warranty, and presents a potentially costly vehicle to own.

Good luck - there's lots of choose from out there.
