I have an '11 X5 35i M Sport and a '11 135i M Sport. Both great cars, but if I were to choose between one, I'd keep the X5. The fuel consumption was odd: the X5 has a larger tank, so obviously it will cost more to fill it. You have the 128i, so I cannot compare, but the fuel mileage will be better in the 1-series simply because it's a smaller car even though the engines are the same.

Your loaner was probably a stripper with zero or little packages. Do some research and look into the M Sport model. Definitely not a "normal" SUV. Or drive the 50i.

I think a used X5 is a great investment. There are many 2011s coming off lease so there is lots of choice. I haven't had issues with mine, and my dad is on his 3rd X5. Just don't buy one without either a factory or CPO warranty and you won't have to worry about reliability.
