Ceramic pads last the longest and dust the least typically. metallic/semi-metallic pads dust more, and are harsher on rotors, typically.

My race pads dust like a mofo, and eat up the rotors more often. (Not a BMW application)

I'd take a ceramic pad all the time on my X5 when it's time to swap pads as part of normal maintenance. I don't tow anything, and for the street, it'll be perfect for the application.
