I just bought my 2011 X6 50i a few weeks ago.. I looked up on the carfax where the buyer registered and contacted the local BMW dealer that sold the car.. I told them I was considering buying the car and if they wouldn't mind looking up the VIN... THey had no problems doing that and gave me all the details of every time the car was in... had a recent oil change and minor stuff initially.. car only had 20k miles when I bought it... keep in mind your not contacting the owner of the dealer... usually the service advisors are pretty cool.. if there not just call back... I just bought my son a used Honda and we did the same thing.. The folks at the Honda dealer were also very cool and gave us the cars entire service history...
I would't sweat it and just ask..
