My immediate reaction is, that unless some kind of overrated bulbs are being used, this must surely be a big fire risk

Surely BMW should be very interested in an issue like this and be looking to resolve it as a matter of urgency. I would definitely pursue this in no uncertain terms !!!!
Be interesting to see if any one else has had similar issues.
