I wonder whether the TT6 makes sense for the X5. SUV/SAV's have suffered from dropping sales, in large part due to poor fuel economy. The X35d was introduced to combine good performance with better fuel mileage. I wonder what a TT6 would get in terms of mileage. The 335xi consumes 15.7l/100 in the city (winter driving). That is about 15mpg (USA). So what would the X5 get with the same engine ... 12 mpg? I'm not sure how many people would buy it considering the 4.8 has more power and doesn't use much more fuel.

I think BMW is in a tight spot with the X5 from a fuel economy point of view. The X6 gets the TT, but it is a low volume niche vehicle. The mass consumption X5 needs to be better than competing models from both a performance and fuel economy perspective. That is the 35d.
