BMW takes 5w30 pure Synthetic Oil. The Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 found at your local store is NOT pure synthetic, but they're refined/modified crude oil. Regardless, it doesn't hurt your car to put in a quart of non-Pure Synthetic oil.
A BMW V8 will burn oil. Always have a quart of BMW oil handy.
