I'm certain many people have experienced significant repairs between 40-80k miles-that's a huge range and on average 3-4 years of use. That's the typical range in which I've owned most of my cars. What I'm getting at is, this issue isn't really X5-specific. If you want to know what people have experienced on their respective X5s, there's tons of threads in the forum which discuss just that. It would be worthwhile to have a look around. FWIW, I also agree that 42k miles for a 2012 is not that high, especially if you plan to drive so little.
