The narrower the tire the better. The 20s are going to be wider (if you are putting on stock rims) and thus handle like crap compared with the 18s. The $140 for mounting and balancing will be twice a year as you mount/unmount and let's hope they don't damage your rims.
The problem with your 18" package is they are not going to be BMW wheels and they will scream "Look at my Tirerack purchase! I've got them for 6 months out of the year, don't you love them?" and every time you look at your lovely vehicle you will think "when can I get those off".
I do think a better choice is used OEM wheels and your choice of snow tires (check out the tirerack ratings). If you like Rac10000's then go with them, just remember you need new sensors.
