they are both completely different transmissions. The DCT is 2 trans in 1, with a different engagement method than the X5M auto transmission. The DCT is designed for lightning fast shifts while the X5 transmission is designed to shift fast yet still be strong enough to tow/lug around the kerb weight of the car. If anyone here has driven the E46 M3 SMG, I'm sure you will agree that the X5M feels more like that transmission (when pushing it to the limit) than anything else. A better comparison would be the E46 SMG and the X5M transmission.
