I am sorry but thrashing around by yourself on a frozen lake covered with snow is not the same as driving on roads in the same conditions with other cars around you. Winter tires are not just about going, they are about evasive maneuvers and stopping.
I am running OEM 211' s (255/19') w/ Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow RFT's as my winter set since my 2007 and I would not go any other way. I had 18's at first but they were just too soft coming from 20" summers. Granted 211's won't fit the X5M but the 19" combo works well.
