Have you tried different pressure gauges?
Not all gauges indicate the same pressure, especially the analog (stick types).
If you over inflate a tire, you will actually end up with less control over your car as there is less rubber on the ground. It's entirely up to you if you want to go higher than what's recommended by the manufacturer. I wouldn't.
