So.... problem was caused by a leak in the driver door allowing water to get into the door and short out the cables inside. Cable eventually split and needed replacing - as well as door sealing where the water was getting in. Probably good that it was caught this way before the water damaged the fabric of the door itself and caused paint / rust issues.
