I've had the carbon cleaning done twice on my 2009 135i. Both times I've witnessed a noticeable improvement in how the engine breathes. I also noticed a slight improvement to MPG after having it done. On all 80% highway driving I used to get 260 miles on a full tank (13.5 US gallons) Now I regularly approach 300 miles per tank on the same route. I'm fortunate that I have a buddy who owns a shop that can take care of the carbon build up at a very reasonable price, so I get it done every 40k miles.
My gf and I recently bought an 2011 X6 35i which is why I lurk here too.
