it was the compressor. I picked another complete unit up from ebay and swapped them out (followed
)
All working well now!
I've opened up the old compressor to see what was wrong and 2 of the bearigns have rusted and the filter failed which has let moisture in which caused the bearings to rust and expand/friction - noise!
