A few months ago I had a small leak on top of the engine. It was one of the lines underneath the top engine cover that's part of the turbo cooling, where the metal pipes meet the rubber hoses. It would drip one drop at a time every once in a while and the smell would enter the cabin. It never resulted in a low coolant light though as I only needed to tighten the OEM clamp. I was able to identify which one was leaking as the coolant would dry as a white-ish powder around the pipe connection and below where it was dripping on the hot engine block.

Is the smell in the cabin persistent? I would check to see if your carpets are dry underneath the dash on both sides. If they are wet, it could be your heater core leaking.

Hope this helps, good luck.
