I turned the car back on 10 mins later, with no warning lights, Check Control was OK too. I notices some liquid on the ground inside the driver's front wheel which may be related?

Does anyone recognize this sound/issue? Can I drive in this condition 200 miles back to San Francisco before seeing my mechanic?

Like others have said, normal for it to run when turned off, just normally nearly silent so nobody notices it. The turbo water pump for N63 & S63 is under recall so check your VIN on BMW's recall site. It will make that noise also If it gets air in the system, check your turbo coolant lines and coolant level.
