I think people are well aware its better to buy used since they depreciate so fast now.

With the number of sales of new vehicles that dealers converted to DEMO models at the end of 2015 so they could keep the sales crown ...
that's really not a big surprise at all.
Eventually all those expanded demo fleets on the lot need to go....
Another factor at play is very aggressive lease buyback programs. Lease buyback cars become preowned cars. Earlier this year I picked up a 2013 X1 M sport for around 25k and walked right past a 2015 model with the exact same features ( save different interior leather ) languishing on the same dealer with a sticker of 47k and of course there were also 2016 F48 models right alongside.
