Many of what I mentioned don't use the phone accelerometer. They use the OBD port and the speed indicated or GPS based on time. Torque App or DashCommand are the two most popular. You can see vids on youtube about them.
I've had a OG G-tech from the late ninties or early 2000's, and it can be flawed very often based on just road elevation or a bump in the road. But it's not a cheap solution today.
That said, there are a lot of viable options out there, the price you want to pay can vary by a large margin.
