to cut the problem in two (look VS safety) you could use "smoked plasti dip".
it does exist to dark the taillights for example.
i've bought this one to make my E91 taillights, which i never did (forgot a bit and time went by). i will try to make them with that "smoked" plasti dip on my E70 ...
